I have just finished painting my inside trim and woodwork, using a latex primer and a latex top coat, but I realize I should have used an oil-based finish coat for a very smooth job. How can I make the finish smoother than it is? A good oil paint will make a smooth, attractive finish that is washable, but I do not think you need such a finish. Latex finishes will do just as well, depending on what you use. A single coat of finish paint on a primer is not quite enough for a smooth, solid finish. You need two coats on top of the primer. You may have put your finish coat on too thickly in an attempt to make it cover.
